Kitchen Wall Display

After moving in nearly 2 years ago we went mad with Magnolia paint and ashamed to say it has been left that way ever since. Now I am in desperate need of some colour and want to add abit of interest to my walls, especially the Kitchen as it is where I like to spend alot of time. Here are a few ideas I have found, what do you think?

Come & Meet Herman - The German Friendship Cake!

Please let me introduce you to.......

Herman - The German Friendship Cake

No I have not gone mad, I completely 100% reassure you that whilst I am typing this I am sane, honestly!

So you are probably wondering who is this Herman dude and whats his game? and just to put it straight it is not about some "adult" film my man thought when I said Herman is moving in ;)

A introduction to Herman:
Herman the German friendship cake is a sourdough cake recipe which is several decades old. Obviously the mix isn't decades old but you get the idea! It passes through circles of friends and family similar to a chain letter.

Below is my Herman Journey

Herman arrived in his little bowl and sheet of instructions.

A big THANK YOU to the lovely lady
who brought Herman into my life :) (I blame you hehe)

The Instructions read as follows:
Hello, my name is Herman.
I am a sourdough cake. I'm supposed to sit on your worktop for 10 days without a lid on.
You CANNOT put me in the fridge or I will die. If I stop bubbling, I am dead.
  1. You get Herman and put him in a large mixing bowl and cover loosely with a tea towel.
  2. Stir well
  3. Stir well
  4. Herman is hungry. Add 1 cup each of plain flour, sugar and milk. Stir well.
  5. Stir well
  6. Stir well
  7. Stir well
  8. Stir well
  9. Hungry again. Add the same as day 4 and stir well. Divide into 4 equal portions and give away to friends with a copy of these instructions. Keep the 4th one.
  10. Herman is very hungry. Stir well and add the following:
  • 1 cup sugar
  • half tsp (teaspoon) salt
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 2/3 (two thirds) cup of cooking oil
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla essence
  • 2 cooking apples cut into chunks
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 2 heaped tsp cinnamon
  • 2 heaped tsp baking powder
Mix everything together and put into a large greased baking tin. Sprinkle with a quarter of a cup of brown sugar and a quarter of a cup of melted butter. Bake for 45 minutes at 170-180C. Cake freezes well and is also delicious warm with cream or ice-cream.

I took photos of Herman each day to share the progress of him, yes Barry thought I had gone mad (That was nothing to do with the fact I would say "Morning herman" each day!) and it caused quite a stir on my Facebook! but it was fun to share the updates and secretly everyone loved hearing of him, I know!

Day One

Day Two

Day Three

 Day Four (After his feeding!)
Day Five, Six, Seven and Eight - He looked the same pretty much through out these 4 days so didn't want to bore you with photos of the same bowl of mix......but can you guess what day the photo was taken? hehe

Day 9 - Such a proud day to produce little tiny Hermans that I was able to pass on. Excitable ladies turned up on the doorstep for their own Hermans

Day 10 - Cooking time! I must admit now that I don't do baking very often so I was very apprehensive about putting Herman in the oven. I have been scarred by memories of lovely cake mixes that don't rise and turn out like biscuits so I broke it to Herman gently this will be the end of him hehe
You may notice that there is no raisins, nuts or apple chunks like the recipe states......I changed it a little and instead I added Raspberries and White Chocolate chunks......yum!

And boy did he rise to the occasion! he was in the oven for 45 mins and tasted delicious!!!!

Ok so 10 days is a long time to make a cake but truthfully I would do it all over again, it was so light and fluffy, and there are so many variations to try!

Hope you enjoyed meeting Herman!

There is lots of Herman info here - including how to start your own.

I also created a Facebook Group where all Herman carers can keep track on where their Hermans end up and keep updated on their own prgress, as well as sharing the many variations to try out!

Saturday Night At The Movies! - Sleep over fun for Kids

I know 3 Blog posts in one day, but I just keep finding such cool please excuse me...and enjoy!

Saturday Night At The Movies
Children's Sleep Over Idea!

When your children have friend for a sleep over why not host a movie drive in night.

Pinned Image

What you need:

Large Boxes (one for each child attending)
Felt Pens/Crayons or if your feeling brave paints!
Children ;)
and a movie!

As children arrive hand them their box which they can decorate and turn into their very own personal car for the evening.
Then once everyone has their vehicles park them up in front of the tv and show the movie......don't forget to hand out the popcorn :)

You could also create a Ticket Office and give each child drink, food and movie tokens that they can exchange themselves at a special designated stall!

Thank you to Homemaking Fun

I am dying to sing out loud now and do some finger clicking......."Saturday night at the movies, who care what picture we see, when im sitting with my baby in the back row of the balcony.........."

Blog Milestone - yippee!

Yesterday my blog had 271 unqiue visitors
I reached 2,000 over all visitors since I started on the 2nd february 2012 :)

Thank you to all you lovely readers!

An Eye Spy Jar

An Eye Spy Jar!

Whilst browsing Pinterest I came across this fabulous activity idea to do with the kiddy winks.
I will definitely be doing this when at my Nannying job next week.

I found this idea leaded back to The Magic Onions Blog. She also suggests this as a great way to entertain children in long car journeys and I completely agree!

All you need is a Jar, some little treasures to add in and some rice!....that is it :) - Just pop them in the Jar and seal the lid tight.

Put the rice and treasures in the jar, making sure to leave an inch or so of space between the top of the rice and the lid as you want the rice to be able to move freely inside the jar.
As your little one turns the jar, the rice falls over itself in the jar, revealing and then covering your treasures.

Play Eye-spy Jar in the car. You know what's inside the jar, so say... 'Find me an acorn hat and see how long it takes them :)

THANK YOU to  The Magic Onions for sharing the amazing idea!

Ellie's Fund - Empty Baby Wipe Packet Collection

Yesterday I got an invite to join this event in the land of Facebook and what a great idea it is to raise money. What I have done is copied and pasted the info below for you to read and how you can help by taking part. It has really touched me reading Ellies story at, my friend lost her little boy to a brain tumour so really want to help any way I can.

'Ellie's Fund' was set up after the death of 14 year old Ellie Othick-Bowmaker.
During the 3 years that she fought her own 2 brain tumours, Ellie helped to raise over £25 000. She inspired many people to join in.
Ellie's legacy is the money that is being used to help others.

Just by collecting your old baby wipe packets you could help raise money for Ellie's Fund Brain Tumour Trust, ( to help families of children with brain tumours and other cancers and raise awareness of brain tumours.

Collect your empty baby wipe packets (any brand) and wrap them in an envelope, thick plastic bag or box. Fewer, bigger parcels are better.

When you have a parcel - perhaps you and friends could create a parcel together? - e-mail for a freepost postage label and drop off the parcel at your local post office.

Each postage label can only be use once so if you need more (and the hope is you will!) just e-mail again!!

The packets go directly to a recycling centre who credit Ellie's Fund with the money (not to Ellie's Fund). The packets are made into other items such as plastic bibs, dustbins and watering cans.

If you'd like to know more about Ellie's Fund the website is - this is also our 'events' page.
Join Ellie's Fund>
I will certainly be sending off mine, will you?

Simple to make too>

Another thing to add on to my 'To Do' list...........I need a bigger piece of paper ;)

Gift Development

I have been creating gifts at Little Treasures Kettering for nearly 2 years, where does the time go. This week I have finally managed to make up some more of my 'Baby Ice Creams'. Whilst I was editing the photos I came across a photo of one I made 2 years ago, at the very beginning of LTs....can you see the difference?

2 years ago......

I do love product...or should I say gift development..
There is such a notable change in appearance, I think you will agree! with how the 'Ice Cream' is formed and of course the gift wrapping and tags.

I wonder what they will look like in another 2 years time..........
